Louisa’s Life

Louisa was born in Northiam, Sussex on 28 January 1825. She arrived in Sydney from Kent on the Roxburgh Castle in May 1839. She was in the company of her parents and siblings and came to Australia as assisted passengers. There was fever on the ship by the time it had reached Cape Town so was taken to Quarantine on arrival. The inspecting doctor was not concerned so the passengers disembarked the following day. Louisa’s brother Henry died on the voyage.

The family had bought some elementary farming equipment with them as well as cattle that were offloaded at Cape Town for a spell from sea travel then re-loaded to arrive in Sydney later that year.

Louisa married Joseph Doust on 18 April 1845 at Narellan. They had thirteen children.

Louisa’s father was a Wesleyan Lay Preachers in the Cawdor Camden area.

Louisa’s Obituary

For many months past the deceased lady, Mrs. Joseph Doust, of the Oldham Hill Vineyards, Camden, had been a great sufferer and on Wednesday evening expired at her late home. For 50 years past has Mrs. Doust been the happy help-mate of her husband and has resided for that lengthy period on the hill, the deceased lady, full of years; was beloved by all and her many acts of benevolence will be greatly missed. The deceased was 72 years of age and native of the old country, Mrs Doust’s maiden name was Nash, an old Camden family in the early days. Mr. Nash was postmaster of Cawdor.
