Joseph’s Life

Joseph was born in Arundel, Sussex to John Thomas Strudwick and Mary Ann Spriggs. He was the second child and first son of three children.

John had married Mary Ann Spriggs on 2 November 1826 at Arundel, Sussex. Their daughter Mathilda was born in Arundel in 1827, followed closely by Joseph.

The Strudwick family embarked on a voyage from London on 4 January 1840  arriving in  South Australia, on the “Eliza” at Port Adeliade on 14, May 1840. Their family had expanded on the way with another son, John William being born on the high seas and registered in Hindmarsh on arrival.

At some stage, the Strudwick family moved to Sandhurst (now the city of Bendigo) and opened a shop named, ‘The London Store’ on Golden Square. Golden Square is near the location that gold was first discovered on the Bendigo Creek in 1851. John knew the business well as his father was a Licensed Victualler, his premises was named ‘New Crown’ on Blackman Street in Surrey in 1822.

Joseph married Rebecca Mary Lydia Kemp in 1857 at Dunnolly, Victoria. They had twelve children. Rebecca had arrived at Port Phillip Bay on the ‘Bombay’ in 1853 with her family.

Joseph was recorded as a miner on census documents until his death in 1907.
